Condition: Good

Date: 1905

Origin: United Kingdom

History:

Longmore Pool was constructed in the early 18th century as the reservoir for a water mill, it has since featured in many artworks for its naturalistic beauty, as it is surrounded by parkland and deciduous woodland. The mill is depicted in the painting, as are trees and fields under a dappled blue grey sky.

In the early 20th century, Sutton Park was already an established public park and was enjoyed by many visitors for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The park had a variety of amenities, including a golf course, tennis courts, and a boating lake. The lake was particularly popular for fishing and boating, and there were also regular rowing races held on the lake.

During this time, the park was also used for various events and celebrations. For example, in 1911, the park hosted a coronation fete in honor of King George V's coronation, which included a range of festivities such as sports events, concerts, and fireworks.

Sutton Park was also an important site for military training during World War I. The park was used for trench digging and other military exercises, and there were even temporary military camps set up within the park.

Overall, Sutton Park played an important role in the life of the local community in the early 20th century, providing a space for leisure, recreation, and commemoration, as well as serving as a site for military training during times of conflict.
